On Wednesday, November 19, 2014, the Social Law Library hosted “Oral Advocacy Before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court & Appeals Court” featuring Hon. Peter W. Agnes, Jr. (Appeals Court), Hon. Robert J. Cordy (Supreme Judicial Court), Hon. Elspeth B. Cypher (Appeals Court), Hon. John M. Greaney (ret) (Supreme Judicial Court), Murray Kohn (Senior Staff Counsel, Committee for Public Counsel Services), and Jennifer Grace Miller (Chief, Government Bureau, Massachusetts Attorney General).  The nuts-and-bolts program was aimed at sharpening appellate advocacy skills by providing practical and proven advice applicable in both criminal and civil appeals before the Supreme Judicial Court and the Appeals Court.  One attendee exclaimed, “Excellent presentation and panel – very practical advice!”

Later that week, on Friday, November 21, 2014, the lecture space once again filled with attorneys eager to learn.  “Complex Issues in Rape, Indecent Assault and Battery, and Other Sex Crimes” was chaired by Hon. Linda E. Giles (Superior Court) and also included Hon. Kathe M. Tuttman (Regional Administrative Justice (Criminal), Middlesex Superior Court), Marguerite T. Grant  (Assistant District Attorney, Norfolk District Attorney’s Office), David A. Deakin (Chief of the Family Protection and Sexual Assault Bureau, Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office), Michael P. Doolin (Defense Counsel, Dorchester, MA), and Larry R. Tipton (Interim Managing Director for the Southeast Region Trial Offices of CPCS). Panelists were drawn from the bench and prosecution and defense bars in order to provide different perspectives on subjects including motions in limine, jury instructions, and trial issues.
